Embedding content from YouTube, Vimeo, Prezi and other sites

When you start to explore external media sites you have many more options for authoring and publishing multi-modal resources and greater opportunities to show your creativity. Using these websites you can create digital resources that can be embedded into ePortfolio pages.

The list of supported external sites includes:

Video: YouTube, Vimeo, TeacherTube, SciVee (science videos)
Audio: Voki (talking avatars), VoiceThread
Presentations: Prezi (Prezi is not currently working as an embedded resource, but you can still link to a Prezi page), SlideShare (see the SlideShare help page)

Google Services: If you have a Google account you can also embed a number of different Google services into your ePortfolio pages e.g. a Google Calendar, a Google Book, a Google Map, or if you use the free Google Drive cloud storage service you can put files such as video, audio, Word docs, Excel spreadhseets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDF documents into your Google Drive then embed them in your ePortfolio page.

You can use any of these sites to create your own digital artefacts or resources that you can then include on your ePortfolio pages, or you can use videos, presentations etc. that others have posted to these sites. Note that if the resource is not your own work, it is good practice to reference it correctly and provide an explanation of why you have included it.

Example: adding a YouTube video

This example demonstrates how to add a YouTube video. Adding resources from the other external sites mentioned above follows the same process.

To get started, first find the video you want to use then copy the URL from your browser's address bar at the top (select the URL and press Ctrl-C to copy, or right-click it and select "Copy").

Once you've created your ePortfolio page, click the "External Content" tab then drag the "External Media" widget into your page.

Add a title and paste the YouTube or Vimeo URL into the URL box. There is no need to enter the width and height as they will be automatically detected, but you can always edit the width and height later if you want to change it from the default.

Note that after saving it, you won't be able to see it in edit mode, but if you click the "Display Page" tab you should now be able to see and play the video.
